I began making self-portraits of myself as a roach in an imaginary space I called Borderlandia.Roaches have been used by artists and writers like Oscar “Zeta” Acosta and Anzaldua, and Audre Lorde to describe people of color in America. Gloria Anzaldúa writes in Borderlands: “Faceless, nameless, invisible, taunted with “Hey cucaracha” (cockroach).

Andrea Muñoz Martinez was born and raised in Uvalde, a rural Texas town 45 minutes from the U.S.-Mexico border and Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, where her mother was born. She paints a colorful imaginary space she calls Borderlandia.
